A Real Earth Day

What was once attacked as fringe is now mainstream.
Tomorrow’s Earth Day, much like the U.S. holiday of Thanksgiving, shouldn’t be a once-a-year moment. Acts, thoughts and beliefs that benefit the globe can be a daily part of life — just like giving thanks.
Yes, Whole Foods Market picked the right day to end the use of [...]

Going Green with Lawn Equipment: Honda

I couldn’t help but want to share this campaign from Honda. Aimed at serious gardening enthusiasts, the direct mail letter is a actually a seed kit (biodegradable paper and all) for flowers.
Once planted, Honda becomes part of your garden — and reminds you that its motorized landscaping gear is eco-friendly.
Many more corporations are opening up to [...]

5 Ways DKNY Can Adopt Bicycling in a Campaign

A month ago, DKNY thought it stylish to dot Manhattan with 70 neon orange bicycles chained to street posts and anything else of permanence. The orange color was garish but drew attention to DKNY’s fall 2008 line. The bicycles also served as a guerilla marketing signal to the company’s campaign promoting two wheels as a mode of transportation and urging New Yorkers to ”Explore Your City.”
Only one problem: The bikes (unintentional, [...]

How Green is Your Cellphone?

Since the most “gadget conscious” cellphone users buy a new device every 9 months, use of recyled materials for these products makes perfect sense. Nokia has announced a prototype (not yet in the market) called Remade. The company is sending environmental signals in advance of the product launch. Blue no longer dominates Nokia’s website. The carefully selected image of a woman, [...]

Rock & Roll, Surfing, Skating — and Fighting Hunger

If you’re a serious blink-182 fan, you know that two members of the now-defunct punk trio got their start in Poway and neighborning Rancho Bernardo of San Diego, California. Punks have always pushed boundaries. As they get older, some also promote causes.
One blink-182 alumni, Tom DeLonge of Angels and Airwaves, not only makes music with his band. He gets to help support [...]

How Green are Your Jeans?

The Federal Trade Commission says it will look at its rules for “green” designations in marketing to see if they need to be expanded. The guidelines were last updated a decade ago, according to an interesting read in the NYT today on the trend of products as environmentally sensitive. Just how green are those soy boxers? Or those vegan shoes? Meanwhile, Seth Godin weighs in today on a [...]

Save a Tree, Clip a Branch

OK, two environmental posts in one day. Time to recommend a product that uses natural resources, but in a very nice way: Field Notes. It’s a 48-page mini notebook that fits in your pocket so you can put pencil (or pen) to paper at those important moments away from the desk. Graph paper for easy chart plotting, sketching, note taking.
Although not the first with the concept, a very [...]

Environmental PR

Earthrace, the eco-friendly powerboat that will maintain a “zero-carbon footprint” while attempting to circumnavigate the globe in March, is looking for pro bono public relations help. To read the full story on Brand Republic or PR Week you must register. That’s where I stopped. The story gets more play if you remove the silly registration step(s). These industry trade [...]

Green Dimes is Brilliant!

Your name is typically worth 3- 20 cents each time it is sold for a direct mailing. One hundred million trees are cut down each year to create the approximately 4.5 million tons of junk mail in the United States. And 28 billion gallons of water go into the production of American junk mail annually. This [...]
