Cartoons are King?

If you keep a blog and can track what catches the majority of readers’ eyes (other than Paris Hilton posts or political opinion), you may have noticed: Some visitors find you for your pictures.

If your blog is about photography, design or illustrators, this is the great.

If you’re sharing ideas, examples and observations, it feels weird.

One of the most visited links on this blog is “Corporate Doublespeak,” a semi-rant on how AT&T wireless claimed a few months ago (Dec. 7) it supported unlocked cellphones that give consumers freedom to shop service providers. The post included the convenient fact that the iPhone is locked and exclusive to AT&T in the U.S.

But that’s not why people click on it today. They like the man with a megaphone — a retro cartoon image I used to illustrate a yelling PR messenger. When I chose him, I was not dreaming of link bait or other tricky ways to lure unsuspecting clicks (especially since I don’t have ads on the blog).

The web finds everything. Type in “megaphone” under a Google search, and the image finishes third. Type “man with a megaphone” and it finishes first.

Not how you want to attract readers but a real-life example to share.
