The One Design Book You Should Own

If Hick’s Law, Ockham’s Razor, and Chunking elude you, but you’re interested in understanding the basics of design, there’s only one book to own.

Universal Principles of Design, by William Lidwell, Kritina Holden and Jill Butler, is a joy to have nearby. Organized alphabetically and categorically, the book guides you with words, photographs and illustrations that walk the user-friendly talk. The focus is “100 ways to enhance usability, influence perception, increase appeal, make better design decisions and teach through design.”

Several good ones: 80/20 Rule? It’s covered. Signal-to-Noise Ratio? In there. Framing? Absolutely. Mapping, Color, Storytelling, Immersion, Hierarchy of Needs and Layering? Read on. So much to learn. So well done.

Should be on the shelf of any serious marketer.
