I love Guy Kawasaki’s startup classic, “The Art of the Start.” If you’re ever feeling hemmed in at your corporate gig or getting ready to go out on your own, it’s one of the best books to keep nearby.
In it, you’ll find proven advice and inspirational counsel. One recommendation on naming companies is to avoid using numbers since people won’t know whether to use numerals or spell the number out.
Here are companies with numbers I can name off the top of my head, and their significance.
-
37 Signals (number of radio telegraph signals identified as possible messages from extraterrestrial intelligence)
-
Six Apart (number of days age difference between co-founders)
-
FortyThree, Inc. (percentage of journalists who don’t trust public relations professionals)
While numbers might not be ultra hot platforms for company names, a few numbers dominate blog postings daily: 10, 5 or 3, as in 10 tips, 5 ways or 3 steps to achieve a goal or improve something.
What companies with numbers in their names come instantly to mind for you, and do you know why?
