Zappos Shoes has come up with one of the better ads I’ve seen in awhile. And it’s so smart, you have to wonder why it wasn’t done sooner since we’ve been living in an airport security checkpoint world since 9.11.2001.
Inside the security screening trays at San Diego International Airport, there’s a very simple message and colorful visual: PLACE SHOES HERE. (outline of two shoe soles). BUY SHOES HERE. (www.zappos.com).
TSA checkpoints are notoriously slow. A single moment of humor instead of the regular gray trays I’ve seen countless times made my day on the way to Orlando this week for a business trip. (I’ll post picture soon.)
Imagine if a leather goods company (wallets) or laptop maker (Dell, Apple, HP) had come up with the same idea. A lot of relevant eyes and minds looking at those trays every day.
Update: Here’s a link on the initial Zappos airport security bin ad launch in Reno-Tahoe and Chattanooga airports. Notice the briefcase pitch.

Ron,
Thanks for the link. Good opportunities for smart marketers.
The TSA rep in San Diego who let me take the photograph (very quickly w/ a Blackberry Pearl) said he believes that Zappos provides the bins to the airport free in return for the ad space.
I saw ads in at least two Zappos flavors: green and red.
