Amazon Kindle Redux

6032-newsweekkindle.jpgBrowsing books to buy on Amazon, I suddenly wished for a Kindle — if just for a moment tonight. The ability to download books on a wireless device is brilliant if you want something now.

Remember the hype and Newsweek cover story two months ago? The product was out of stock less than six hours after going on sale. A quick check of the Kindle on Amazon shows it temporarily out of stock again. It rates 3.5 stars from more than 1,500 user reviewers — some who post their Kindle photos, too. There’s a Kindle community bubbling up.

“I will admit, I am falling in love with this ugly device,” writes one customer.

Did Amazon underestimate consumer demand? Or is it playing the scarcity game?

Some would-be Kindlers in the Amazon Kindle forum are mulling a Sony eReader at Costco for $199 + $50 books credit. They can’t get it on the Sony site. It’s also sold-out.

Supply and demand at work.
