The website, dictionary.com has posted its Top Words of 2007. The list of 10 words or phrases were chosen because they figured heavily in dictionary.com’s search logs and searches elsewhere on the Internet. Here they are (and why) in the past 12 months.
Jan. – water intoxication(fatal outcome of a contest where entrants held their “wee for a Wii”)
Feb. – coffee art (visuals atop cups of espresso)
March – bracketology (NCAA college basketball)
April – nappy (part of title from book that sparked NYC school controversy)
May – diatribe(led to unruly college student’s YouTube fame after campus police zapped him with Taser)
June - virtual dissection (point-and-click alternative for students to cutting open a frog with scapel)
July – dogfighting (NFL quarterback Michael Vick)
Aug. - itch mite (insect blamed for skin rash outbreak in Chicago)
Sept. -teratoma (type of tumor)
Oct. - fire (Southern California wildfires)
Nov. – steroids(alleged use by Blackwater private guards in Iraq, according to lawsuit by families of Iraqis)
Dec. – subprime (mortgages)
