Corporate Doublespeak

man-with-megaphone.gifHow’s this for a convenient fact? AT&T Wireless CEO Ralph de la Vega says his company allows customers to use any cellphone they want on the network, not just those sold in AT&T stores. ”We are the most open wireless company in the industry,” he’s quoted as saying in today’s USA Today. The comment is a swipe at Verizon, as well as the Open Handset Alliance (see posting earlier this week) that includes Google and its Android project, which envisions a world in which an open platform gives consumers the choice to shop with their mobile handsets for service from the wireless carrier of their choice. Nokia, Motorola, LG and other cellphone makers who partner with AT&T can’t be too happy. There is one exception to de la Vega’s PR openness comment to a large national daily newspaper. The iPhone is open only to his company’s network. Is he ready to let AT&T customers unlock iPhones and use Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, Cricket or any other regional carriers? Don’t expect that advertising blitz anytime soon.
