A poll released today on MarketingCharts says American shoppers plan to spend the same or less on gifts as last holiday season. Average total spending per shopper will be $662. That’s to cover an average of 16 people on gift lists. The survey includes a breakout of most popular product categories, but what’s not on the list may be in a five years: Virtual gifts given on sites like Facebook. At a dollar each, they’re a bargain that enable you to spread goodwill and cheer much farther. Will there be a day when someone gives 662 virtual gifts to 662 people? The news media might just jump on that story. Maybe the Facebook PR team is looking for such a person. Imagine an all-virtual holiday shopper. That would have to be a first — and deflect attention from the Beacon fiasco.
